METI went above and beyond the standard duties to provide critical support the Navy, Military Sealift Command, and the Nation with support to the USNS COMFORT and the critical role that the USNS COMFORT was providing in the fight in New York City against Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). In under four days, including a weekend, METI went from concept to capability and delivered an initial upgrade to the USNS COMFORT. The concept included a strategy that included the option for a second upgrade, which was done two weeks later after just a six day detailed design, verification, and implementation process.
This entire effort was done rapidly and with minimal mission impact, providing the ship with superior data rate and communications. The network connectivity that METI significantly enhanced was imperative to protecting American lives. The improved networks allowed medical professionals with the ability to quickly onboard new patients and have access to the patients’ critical medical records. The networks also provided the ship the ability to collaborate, especially with continually changing logistical requirements, at an unprecedented rate.
